Kennedy's Sunset

This sunset was taken from the Lake Michigan shoreline, looking out toward the Manitou Islands. According to the old Indian fable, the two island represent the two baby bears, who passed away as they tried to swim across Lake Michigan to escape a horrible forest fire in Wisconsin. Mother bear was ahead of her babies, and upon reaching the shoreline, she crawled upon the bluff and looked back toward her young cubs.

Unfortunately, the Lake Michigan waves were too much for the little ones, and they couldn't make it safely to shore. As the legend continues, it is said that the spirit of the Manitou covered the two cubs with sand, creating the Manitou Islands, and then covered the heartbroken mother bear, forming the point of the Sleeping Bear Dunes.

On this night, I had just returned from my first assignment as a photographer for the volunteer organization, "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep". I was blessed with the opportunity to photograph an angel here on earth, her name is "Kennedy". She had passed away early in the morning following the day of her birth, leaving behind her twin sister to go through this life without her.

After taking pictures of Kennedy, I headed from Traverse City back to Glen Arbor. As evening set in,I decided to head out for the sunset, because I needed to spend some time thinking about the day, and how Kennedy, her parents, and her family, had changed my life forever.

So, as the sun set on Sleeping Bear Bay, I took this photograph. In my mind, it was immediately "Kennedy's Sunset", one of God's first gifts to her. And just another of the many gifts He has given me. I am thankful for many things in my life and especially, the gift of being able to capture His beauty...both in nature and in His people.
